Hey all, Came across an opportunity to purchase a 1998 10 oz SML. One thing confused though, the mintage is listed as 13533, however the COA is listed as 22220....how does the numbering work exactly?

Sorry, don't know the correct answer about the total mintage. I just want to say that is a nice coin. If the RCM ever comes out with something similar (at a reasonable price of course), I'll be all over it.

I owned a few of these 10oz-ers with the COA number larger than the mintage. The explanation is that the more than 13,533 were minted and only 13,533 were sold (the unsold coins and sterling silver COAs subsequently melted). And, since the COA number have little to no correlation with the order in which the coins were sold, we end up with some COA numbers larger than the number of existing coins.

Happens quite a bit. Would be weird if the RCM was the sole retailer of their coins, but in fact they rely on a number of distributors, so can't control, really, the order in which the coins and attached COA numbers are sold or left unsold.

Beautiful coin regardless. Very nicely presented too. I for one hope that the RCM stops here and don't make another 10oz SML. Makes this one all the more special.

Thanks, SilverBug. Beautiful coins. Why can't RCM produce more 10 oz? I would like 10oz bars as well.

maybe the bad sale of 1998 10oz scared them? or they like to make some one-of-a-kind maples, like this one, the 1989 proof maple leaf, and 2010 piedfort maple...

I hope they don't break tradition and start re making their one-offs like the 1998 10oz, the 1989 proofs, 2010 kilo, 2011 1/2 oz (though design is different), 2010 piefort, ...
Flooding the market with every possible size and finish like the Perth Mint degrades the collectible-ness of the coins I think.

I believe that it's a little more than this. My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that the COA numbers are randomly assigned at production so there is no correlation to order of production not just the order of sales. That is, number 000001 is not necessarily the first produced and number 020000 is not the twenty thousandth coin produced.

In this case, it doesn't mean that at least 22220 were produced and that 8687 coins were unsold and melted. All it means is that the mint intended to produce 22220 (or more).

Make me wonder why people seem to pay more for low COA numbers when the coin may not have been an early strike.

Incidently, does anyone have an estimated value of the 1998 10oz? Does it sell for much of a premium over bullion rate?

Seem most selling on ebay at the moment go for a bit over $700 so a nice premium over spot per oz.

If all you are really looking for is a 10oz silver coin, there are plenty of other choices out there that are much closer to the price of silver.

https://online.kitco.com/bullion/si...kk_10oz.html
For example, the 10oz Koala & Kookaburra coins can be found from $ 325 to $ 350

Don't forget that the 10oz Maple is a collector coin, so a premium over silver's price is normal.

Nice premium over spot. Didn't know until now that the coin has edge lettering and a sterling silver serialized certificate.
So can we expect a 25th anniversary silver maple leaf next year? What would you guys like if it happens?

What was the issue price for that 1998 10th Anniversary silver maple? A 25oz 25th Anniversary coin might be out of my reach based on current spot price and RCM pricing.
