I returned $50 in pennies to the bank yesterday and they weighed each roll and a small scale. I've seen them do this before with nickels and quarters. Basically it tells them if there is 50 pennies in a roll. If there are more or less it will buzz and they wont accept that roll.
Since I had searched these rolls I took out all pre 83 along with others I kept. So it was the least amount that a roll of pennies can weight. With the different weights of pennies I'm surprised the scale will work.
Do all banks do this for penny rolls?

never heard of this before, but a lot of banks are different. Maybe that particular bank has been shorted so many times that they needed to do something like this.

With the different weights of coin due to change in metal, wear, and corosion, I can't see how they can get an accurate count. I"ve never heard of any of the banks I deal with using that method.

Two purposes:
Be on their toes for gross cheats.
Make it appear to be on their toes.

LOL, weighing a roll of cents is utterly worthless for determining a count of coins considering there is a 30g variance between an all-zinc roll and an all-copper roll However, it is perfectly legitimate for nickels, dimes, and quarters where intentional composition differences are not an issue.

Banks in my area randomly do this. I know the tellers at my usual bank so they never weigh the rolls but I've seen it sporadically done before.

That's why I didn't understand it. You could easly put 47 or 48 pre 82 pennies in and get away with it. Get rich 2 cents at at time.
I am good friends with the manager and she has them get the pennies for me so it surprised me when she weighed everything.

I take it your bank doesn't have a coin counting machine. I would hate to roll $50 or more worth of pennies. Then again there are banks in my area that won't accept rolled change, they unroll it and send it through the machine.

Interesting. At my bank, they have a coin counter and will not accept any hand rolled coins. Everything goes through the counter.

My bank dumps EVERYTHING into the coin counter, no matter what. If it comes from a customer, it goes through the counter.

I haven't re-rolled any of my cents in over a year. My local BofA gives me heavy-duty plastic coin-bags each time I pick up bank boxes of cents. I normally go through 2 boxes per week, and take back 1 bag with $50.00 in it. I simply swap it out for two new boxes each time I'm there. Heck, it's very rare that the tellers even ask that I swipe my card for verification.
I've been keeping all copper for almost a year, and I'm still finding just under 20% copper in the boxes I'm getting. My account has never been charged due to a short bag. I have noticed that Brinks rolls will give you anywhere between 48 and 52 coins per roll...and I'm guessing that they're simply weighing the coins before they roll them. I've often wondered if they simply weigh my $50 bags of cents instead of running them through a coin counter.

Machine wrapped rolls of 48-52? I didn't think that was possible.

By me most banks have now gone to sending out bulk coins for counting. None of the Bank Of America or Chase banks still have counting machines. Any coins brought in that can't be counted fast by a teller, goes into a plastic bag and sent out for counting. The total is entered into your account minus the charge for that service. NO ACCOUNT? Then your sent a check for the amount minus not only the counting service but the sending of the check. About 7% for that service so be happy if your banks still count bulk coins. Bank of America by me will no longer order nor give out bulk coins unless you have a buisness that requires coins.
