Sounds awesome to me. I'm sick of sifting through them all!

Thoughts?!

Where did you hear this? That language doesn't appear in their published rules.

They were a nuisance to me while searching but I never had a problem with the sale of those clearly marked according to the law. This won't stop fakes being passed off as genuine though and that is the real problem, in my opinion.

Here is the text of an email that just arrived a few minutes ago.

The ebay marketplace for coin collecting is vibrant. Buyers and sellers alike enjoy access to both a great selection and a highly engaged community. Customers within the Coins & Paper Money category have told us that the ability to shop and sell confidently on ebay is an important factor for them.

Based on this feedback, and after closely reviewing the coin experience on ebay, we have decided to update ebay's Stamps, currency, and coins policy to disallow replica coin listings on ebay.com, effective February 20. Any replica coin listings on ebay on February 20 will be allowed to end normally.

This update reflects standards across the coin industry and helps ensure compliance with applicable laws that require replica coins to be permanently marked with the word "copy." We also expect that this update will increase marketplace confidence by letting our community know that coin listings on ebay are authentic, so they'll receive the most positive ebay experience possible.

As always, thank you for selling on ebay.

Sincerely,

The ebay Seller Team

It's a step in the right direction, but it won't thwart the crooks; it just adds to the illusion that "all is well*" on the 'Bay--imo.

*not to say there aren't many great sellers on ebay. But, unlike a dealer site like vcoins--that has stricter standards and guarantees, the responsibility is largely upon the buyer @ ebay to keep themselves safe. I won't buy anything there unless I'm absolutely certain about my knowledge--or the seller is 100% legit. /soapbox

As usual, a day late, a dollar short, and not as useful as they think.

What about contemporary counterfoots from the 1800? Copies made before HPA? Henning nickels?

The good news is that this will probably cut the listings by at least 50%, making it easier to find the stuff I want.

The bad news is that all this really means is that sellers will no longer identify their replicas as such...

You have to feel a bit sorry, though, for all the "power" sellers on ebay with 100,000+ feedback that probably have tens of thousands of replica coins in stock and ready to list...

This is good news. The Chinese fakes are usually sent without "COPY" on them, even if they show COPY in the pictures. The huge flood of these in our coin market is not good for the hobby. More often than not, shady sellers put these out there as genuine coins.

The coins the Chinese sellers are sending are unmarked. Here is a real 1892 Morgan and a fake unmarked 1879-S Morgan that I bought from a Chinese seller as a test.
