Of course this is great news. And of course this is what is needed to stop all sorts of fakes, counterfeits, copies, etc. Similar types of laws have been passed almost everywhere on murder, robberies, etc. and just look how great that worked out. I really don't see the problem with a coin that says copy clearly on it. If you don't like them, just don't buy them. For people that do like them, such is life. I can see the problem though how so many are afraid of tampering to remove the COPY but just how does it really hurt? Go to Walmart, Sears or Kmart and look at all the things made in China or so many so many other countries and none say copy, fake, etc. So many are direct copies of USA products and no one really cares.

This is good news, Canada's listings are pretty clean now because of work here by guys like Mike Marshall that forced ebay to obey Canadian law regarding all replicas and fantasies (stamped or not) being illegal and getting them off. It will be SUPER nice to view all the listings from all countries and not see this stuff posted anymore.

I say very little will be accomplish, and less production process for the Chinese fake to have the word replica or copy on the coins. I can see more fake slabs taking its place. ebay makes it too easy for registering new membership.

Is this just ebay US or other sites too? I looked at announcements in US and Australia and no matches for a search for "coin" or "replica". Jeff

Macmercury, it won't control the flow of illicity fakes sold as "genuine". Excepting buyers spotting all the fakes themselves, there needs to be more aggressive intervention. Such as a respected group like PNG reviewing, then "certifying" a coin seller for a modest fee. Then, if there were any complaints against them, PNG pulls their cert. This business of ebay sellers getting caught selling fakes, not being shut down, or just moving on to a new ID is pretty sad. ebay really needs to put their heads together and fix this--not just for coins, but other high-ticket items that are routinely faked and sold on ebay. (IMO)

Quote:We also expect that this update will increase marketplace confidence by letting our community know that coin listings on ebay are authentic, so they'll receive the most positive ebay experience possible. That's a pretty optimistic statement. I can see this move cutting down on the overt sale of replicas but don't understand how it will have any effect on people selling replicas as genuine.

Anything that hurts the Commie Chinese counterfeiters is good in my book! I think they should allow contemporary counterfeits to be sold though, since they are a niche of the hobby.

Good, I'm sock of sifting through them too. And no offense to the penny/nickel collectors but I wish they had a further classification that showed only silver coins. I know you can search on the word silver but not everyone that lists silver coins puts that in the title..so I have to look through either all US coins or the subgroups - takes forever! :) Earl

The only conceivable benefit to this is the avoidance of replica-sifting. It does squat to address the deceptive fakes. I'm guessing they studied their revenue streams, realized nobody was buying the replicas and generating them some auction revenue, and took the decision that it was a small price to pay for the potential favorable publicity. At least, for anyone not thinking it through, which could describe a plurality of ebay buyers and sellers both.

Yeap it is much easier to make a fake coin and put in fake a slab and with real cert# number. Plus you don't have to worry about getting your weights right and most people are not going to unslab it to check to see if it is legit.

The scumbags who sell these fake coins need to be taken off of ebay and locked up.

That 79s is quite deceptive at first glance. The S and B give them away.
