We had a perfect chance to switch to metric about 30 years ago but the opportunity was muffed. All they really needed to do was continue to package everything in the usual sizes but with grams or mls on the label for weight and volume. Pretty soon, people would have been tired of all the odd-ball sizes, like 287 ml or 28.5 grams, and switching from that to 300 ml and 30 gram sizes would have been a snap. Anyone else remember all the metric US road signs that were posted way back when? That lasted for a few years and then went away, apparently due to lack of interest. When my wife and I visited the UK back in 2001, we noticed that all of their road signs were in metric, except for the signs announcing turns. Practically all of them read "turn ahead - 440 yards". Yards? Holy cow! Why not just say 400 meters? That isn't exact but it is close enough for driving purposes. It's funny how some quirks just resist the changing times. |

Good call there, as I was wondering why not pwt instead of dwt. I can blame the English on that one no doubt, lol...
Also, the part about measuring a square yard in meters or yards makes sense, as like you said it is just simply a DIFFERENT FORMULA system and the weight is the same, or measurement....

That also makes much sense, but I am not a big fan of the word "avoirdupois", as it must be Latin and a real pain of a word to try an log into the storage banks, lol....
So would it be safe to say....
TROY/dwt weight=eons
GRAMS/avoirdupois=a couple of hundred years
Is it me, or does the second listed there make you wanna smack the inventor of that system right in the mouth....

Metric system is beautiful, and actually has a short learning period.
How much does a cubic yard of aluminum weigh in pounds?
To solve the comparable problem in metric all you need is the SpG of aluminum.

Good call Ed, I needed to sound it out better, lol. That pois at the end should have been the dead give away for me....
I will give the French this, they are masters of playing both sides in diplomacy, perhaps the one thing that has kept them a country for so long, jammed right in the middle of a not so solid geographical position. Via, they have ticked off just about every country to every direction of France, lol....
And thanks to ol Ben and his lady skills, they did indeed play a huge role in our country's independence, via that naval blockade at Yorktown....
