I read an interesting article recently regarding the dorment Eisenhower dollar. It didn't really mention a key date though. Does anyone know/have an opinion as to what the key date would be whether it be proof or mint state? Thinking about picking up a few NGC/PCGS graded examples. Thanks for your input.

I'm guessing the key dates are not actual dates in themselves, but varieties within those dates. I think there are three different varieties of the1972 Ike, and one of those is worth quite a bit.

There are several Ike experts roaming around that should be able to help more.
I've never actually even seen one in person, lol..
Rest in Peace

The key date for the Ike is the 1973S Silver Clad Proof. Lowest mintage of the Series, a little over 1 million, plus given many were melted in 1980 etc it's possible the actual remaining amount is way lower than 1 million.

Also, always be on the look-out for the 1972P Type 2 Reverse- this coin commands a real nice premium!

Good Luck!

The key date really is condition dependent. Of course, in 1972 Philly made at least three known and attributed varieties known as Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3. Type 2 and Type 3 are the most expensive. A type 2 in MS-63 and above is a hundred dollar+ coin. A type 3 in MS-65 is also over $100. The 1971 in silver at MS-67 is a two hundred dollar plus coin. The 1976 Silver in MS-68 is a three to four hundred dollar coin. And the 1976 Type 1 in Gem is an expensive coin... probably over a hundred dollars. Many business stirkes at MS-66 and above are major rarities and worth hundreds of dollars.

I'm not a big fan of recommending Ike proofs because NGC and PCGS are way too loose in giving out PR69DCAM that numismatically the damage has already been done. The 1973 and the 1976 is silver tend to be the more expensive versions.

The great thing about Ikes is that there are lots of curious varieties being discovered and yet more to be discovered- and given that the series is yet to be popular- you can still cherry lots of nice ones.

minor little bitty spoiler... I predict the Ike series will get much more interesting soon. Can't say anything more.

What Chuckster said. I got my 73 PR68DCAM for 35 bucks which was about right on value. The 72type 2 values over a thousand in MS65, so that tells ya where that one stands. Those are the two main ones that would be considered keys.
