Hello,
After searching a ton of quarters, and finding nothing, I tried some .50 rolls. Seems the only problem is those at the local banks are often already gone through.
Today I picked up some dimes. In the first roll, the second dime was a 1959 silver dime.
Maybe my luck will be better doing dimes. BTW, these all seem to be rolled by customers.

You should check out the dime roll searching thread in the modern coin forum. That being said I too switched from quarters to dimes and success came with it.

Yes, I would rather find some silver quarters than none at all.
I have learned something new today as well, it does not hurt to ask vendors if they have any .50 pieces in their till. Most of the time they love to get rid of them and you have a chance to bypass other searches who have dropped theirs at the bank.

Coin Star Machines are loaded with Silver from Grandma dumping in those 50 years halfs. Actually this almost happen until someone stopped her! Guess she had about $250 face in silver halfs.

I also found a silver dime in the first roll I ever searched. I've found several of them in Coinstars, but never silver quarters or halves. I almost never find silver halves in rolls, just in loose coins from tellers.

I have read that some people have their banks order an entire box of halves for them from the Federal Reserve.
I have also heard that some banks may now charge for this if they do it at all. If one of the banks in this area does this I need to try it a time or two and see what my luck is like.
Have any of you tried it?
Also, I will check out the dime thread mentioned earlier.

I did read the thread mentioned above.
After reading about rim searching, I finally took a roll and place it in a clear coin roll holder. I closed my eyes and dropped in the silver I had found earlier.
I immediately saw two silver looking coins. The fist turned out to be a 2005 British 5 Pence coin and the second was my earlier silver find.
So, now I have figured out the use of a clear coin roll holder can speed things up. Good thing I did it the slow way though seeing I have a decent 1983 P from this roll.

Ken, I've ordered hundreds of thousands of dollars of coin from banks. Even new coin that I've received has never come from the fed reserve. That would be a VERY rare instance. Also, I've searched every denomination in the last few years. I loved searching cust rolled dimes, but now, like the halves, the tellers are picking the silver dimes. I searched $20k in cwr dimes in 2011, my finds fell off tremendously after the last spike in silver prices.

I would like to get the half dollars but the two banks I have accounts with simply do not care to give out rolls of halves. I think they are a bit soured for some reason. I have always tried to keep my few rolls low and return them in small lots among the local branch locations.
I just found that a new bank in our area has a coin counter in the front. I think I am going to see what their fees and the like are tomorrow and may open an account there to help in my roll searching process.
Exactly who do you ask for the boxes of coins? The tellers I have asked simply say they cannot do such a thing.
Maybe a manager or supervisor is needed.
BTW, have you had any luck with halves. I believe I would except the ones I am getting from the local banks are CR and have already been gone through. Two of the five rolls I was able to get Friday were all bicentennials.
I love doing this seeing how I have collected since I was 14 (and am now 44).

Ken, just ask for the head teller, or whoever purchases the currency or coin. Just ask if they will place a coin order for you. I don't order many boxes of halves as there has been too much competition in my area in the last 4 years. I just dont have the patience to go through 30 boxes of skunks to get that one decent box. I have however found solid rolls of silver halves. Remember that all the halves you buy at the counter are always someones dumps, regardless. Granny's dumps can contain solid silver rolls.

If you find that your bank won't order for you, make them your dump bank or cancel your account. I have a half-dozen accts, and they all serve their purpose.

Quote: If you find that your bank won't order for you, make them your dump bank or cancel your account. I have a half-dozen accts, and they all serve their purpose. Must not live in a large city. If you lived in a large city and said either order coins for me or I'll close my account, they would just hand you the paper work to close it out. In a large city, one more or less customer means way to little when you see lines at each tellers station al day long. By me Bank of America and Chase will not order coins for people unless they have a buisness that requires coinage. Also, they will not accept bulk coins without a charge unless you have such a buisness. If anyone brings in coins that takes to long to manually count, they put them in a plastic bag and send out for counting and you pay for that service. Most banks around me have stopped using coin counting machines. Quote: I would like to get the half dollars but the two banks I have accounts with simply do not care to give out rolls of halves. Same in many, many places today. Why should they have to stop what they are doing for one person's request for a coin that is just not used anymore? And then all they do is return them anyway. Just not what is needed today for proftis for a bank. They are in buisneess to make money.

Carl, I do live in a large city, and like I said, my multiple accounts all serve their purpose, which is to supply me with and receive my coin dumps. They bend over backwards for me even though I carry a minimum balance. I have an acct with BOA, and have not made a deposit since July of 2011, and have never been charged a fee. I also have ordered over one hundred thousand dollars in different denominations and have never been charged a fee to order or dump coin. Been doing this for several years. I have even ordered boxes of coin from banks that gladly offer to do just that; even though I have no account with them.

I have finally found a local bank that actually has a coin counting machine in the front.
I am going to try and find out tomorrow if any of the local banks will order, or provide, some halves for me. When it comes to dimes, or quarters, they do not seem to mind; it is mainly halves.
I wonder if the amount of money you have in your accounts may have something to do with their attitude towards getting coins for you. I guess, as with most things, the amount of money does likely make a difference.
