This coin is very small, about 8mm according to the seller. I am pretty sure it's Zeno but I could be wrong and would like someone to verify it for me. This coin is also being sold for $16. I haven't seen a better one for the price. Zeno doesn't seem very collectible to me but I am wondering if this one would fill that emperor slot.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it may be a Zeno as well, since I found a match for it on Wildwinds. Check out RIC 962. I think that one may be it. Quote: Zeno doesn't seem very collectible to me but I am wondering if this one would fill that emperor slot. I am trying to get into the coins of late Roman emperors (between Honorius and the Byzantine Anastasius - correlating with the final decline and fall of the Western Roman Empire), but most of them are extremely scarce and the ones that are available are usually out of my budget. I'd say yeah, it would fill that hole real good, since most around that price are pretty much basal state (how they are able to identify them is beyond me), and decent ones in slight better condition start to climb in price.

I also can't say 100%, but I do see what appears to be a large N part of the Zeno monogram. So It is a good possibility that it is Zeno.

Thanks for the opinions. I think it is too and later on I may purchase it once I get some money. Along with some other coins to justify the somewhat high shipping charge.
If anyone else knows something about this coin, let me know.

Please let us know if you purchase it (or any other) and receive it. I have seen the huge stock of coins they have and have found some I'm interested in, but have been hesitant to give this seller a go since they are literally like on the other side of the world.

When I purchase coins from that seller, I'm going to get registered mail. The seller says it will take at least 4 weeks for coins to arrive. I will have to be extremely patient.

I just mailed a coin to Australia last week. It took 10 days to arrive. It doesn't get much further than that.

I'll agree that the coin is not certainly identifiable. Maybe that is why I don't have a Zeno. Zeno is an Eastern ruler in that ugly period too late to be Roman and too early to be Byzantine. I do not own a single coin of the Western Empire after Honorius partly because I won't pay the price for coins I can't convince myself are certainly identified. The Eastern ones are crude enough but the Western are worse. Here are Theodosius II, Marcian and four Leo I versions. 5th century coins are interesting and popular but not always very pretty.

The problem is now that I'm seeing several emperors having a very similar monogram. I just consulted RIC X and read through a good deal of it, for several emperors of this time period. Most of them have a very similar monogram. Since the top of the monogram is off of the flan, it's impossible to tell. A few of them have the monogram within a wreath.
I sort of like the coin, but yes, I'm uncertain about purchasing it now.

It seems like the top of the monogram is what ruler it is, but it could be similar for some of the others as well. Here are some of the monograms in RIC X.
