Hello,

I have come across an interesting heirloom.

I have been trying for a while to uncover the story behind it.

It has 'SA 1902' engraved into the front of it, which immediately tells me it was a souvenir for my great great grandfather (as South Africa at this time was referred to as 'ZAR') from the Boer war, as it was the prisoners of war that made/tampered the coins to bare the images of President Kruger and the crest. Apparently not to uncommon to be sold by the prisoners as jewellery etc.

I have only found one small article with a very similar coin to mine, but the coin in the image I saw was very rough, and you could see how squashed the coin was, where as this one seems pretty well made!

If any one could shed some more light on these coins, or even know the value of such coins would be great.

Many thanks

hello, thank you :)

I thought it was a medal orginally, but have spoken to an expert of Boer war medals, and he does not recogonise it.
Also if yiu look at the side with Kruger on it, yiu can see the stamp marks around the edges (faint circles) and on the top two 'points' of the pendant on the edges you can see horizontal lines, as a modern coin has. though this is so small and I only have my phone as a camera I cant show this! also, the crest on my piece only shows half of the full one.

here is the only web site I have found so far that mentions the squashed coins..

Yes, this "medal" was made by engraving away a ZAR coin, a 2 shillings from the looks of it. Your coin would originally have looked like this. (I'm afraid the tokencoins website has an error; the 2 shillings does not have the crest and bunting the halfcrown has).

As one-off "trench-art" pieces, value is difficult to set. Value depends on quality of workmanship as well as condition. I doubt this one would reach as high as the one on the tokenscoins site; I would guess somewhere in the $20 to $50 range.
