Here's a Greek provincial I picked up from a recommended seller on eBay--which helped me decide, plus how this coin was offered for about 1/2 what other dealers are asking. Still, I offered 14% lower, and got it!

I really like the reverse detail, and suspect there's a little more on the obverse. Course, you know me--I'll post new pics when it arrives.

Ariarathes-Iv,-Cappadocia-Drachm

Ariarathes IV, Eusebes, AR Drachm, Cappadocia, 220-163 BC. Diademed head right / BASILEWS ARIARAQOU EUSEBOUS, Athena standing left, holding Nike in right hand, spear and shield in left; monograms in fields, Gamma Alpha Lambda in exergue. 3,93 grs.

Nice, I only have a few greeks but will be purchasing some more soon. They are nice coins but can get pretty expensive.

They run up quickly for the popular types with good detail.
So I'm hunting for coins at the fringes--anything nice under $60 gets my attention.

There appears to be some confusion about whether these coins belong to Ariarathes IV or Ariarathes V. Wildwinds lists most of them under V, but also lists examples of identical coins under both rulers; CoinArchives lists them mostly under IV. I bought one almost exactly the same as yours as a coin of Ariarathes V.

The coins are all dated by regnal year; yours, like mine, is dated "Year 33". I have difficulty believing that both kings just happened to issue more or less identical coins at around the thirtieth year of their reigns; surely the coins all belong to one king or the other. I just can't figure out which.

Sap, thanks for that information! That's very interesting about the two rulers; I was slightly confused by this too. I could easily imagine that if Ariarathes V was aware that Ariarathes IV had issued coins in "year 33", that A.V would make sure his looked different? Then again, maybe I'm thinking too hard. Sap, you contribute so much to these forums, it's nice to see some of your collection--nice example of this type!
