I bought this 1855-O Seated Half for MS62 retail money. As you can see it's in an ICG MS64 holder. I want to get her into an NGC or PCGS holder as a 63 (at least :))

What do you think? Better chance at NGC or PCGS or does it make a difference? What about the obverse "toning" spots that look like the start of corrosion?

Comments/advice appreciated.

I'd go with PCGS since I expect the chance of success is about the same at PCGS and NGC and the PCGS holder would probably enhance resale value more. The toning spots look like toning only; I would have no concern about potential corrosion.

Looks like a fully lustrous, frosty MS coin with minimal marks and a solid strike; beautiful and very pricey in this grade! I'd be surprised if it didn't at least get that '63. Make sure you report back on your result!

Very nice Seated Liberty Half!

I would have no problem sending that coin in for a TOP III TPGer.

As you were told on another forum, you can send it to PCGS and try a crossover and if it won't cross you can get it back in the same ICG holder. I believe you can specify MS-63 as a minimum crossover grade. Then it will crossover as long as it grades 63 or better. If you send it to NGC it will have to be as a regular submission and it will be broken out and treated as a raw coin which could mean the possibility of a lower grade or even a details grade.

Thanks for the comments. I found out NGC only accepts cross-overs from PCGS so they're not an option for now.

After an in-hand review, and assuming I don't see anything wrong, she'll go to PCGS with an MS63 minimum.

I would even prefer an ANACS slab to ICG, so if PCGS doesn't cross it at 63, I'll go with ANACS.

I know, I know. It's about the coin, not the slab. Can't wait to see it in-hand.

Here's my in-hand pics. She has excellent luster that I can't really capture in my images. The strike looks very strong.

Oughta cross at 63, anyway. I take it that purplish color above the shield is a image artifact.

that's an MS-64 coin. ICG got it right. The reverse is beautiful- probably a technical MS65. I've seen lots of silver classics in MS-64 holders that look on par with your piece.

I don't think it'll cross over 63 - what few marks there are, are in relatively prominent positions. The value essentially doubles from 63-64, so they're going to be cautious.

Is that a clash in the reverse shield, from the obverse one?

Might be a clash but not likely from the obverse shield, they aren't opposite each other.

What's in the reverse shield doesn't show nearly as much in-hand. Not sure what it is but it's "in" the shield and not on it.

I realize a straight cross to an MS64 is not likely. The luster is very strong, as is the strike, so if no surface problems are found a 63 is what I hope for (that's my min. on the submission). It'll be a few weeks....

I'll follow what when the results are available. Thanks for all the comments!
