Very interesting MK, nothing beats real science....

Seems like there was another scientist that predicted a tsunami in the Pacific maybe, like a smaller Island within a five year window, as he has been on the Island studying it for many years....

The measurement he used, had to do with elasticity of the shoreline rock formations and the cracks in between. Noticed I said elastic, as the rocks cracks spread apart over time, and seems like when the gap got wide enough he predicted a tsunami within five years, and it hit a few years later, and no major casualties as they were all prepared for it and had warning horns an place and a high ground designated area to go to when the horn did indeed sound, back around early 2000....

I might be wrong on how it caused it, but seems like the rocks build up pressure over time, and after a while it snaps like a rubber band, causing perhaps a slight plate shift an minor underwater Earthquake right off the coast. I could be wrong on that, as I am sure one of you will chime on who saw the same doc that I did....

I saw a few shows on this. The one in Alaska as well as the La Palma that show how the volcano is being filled with water and an earthquake or eruption could cause a part to breakaway, thus, cause a landslide which could trigger a tsunami. I know the trench in the mid atlantic is widening as well

That's right, MK, nothing to see here, move along, move along...

MANY things are possible if unlikely. This is called the Black Swan effect. Simply because the odds of something devastating happening are long does not mean they are impossible.

For example... in 1859 there was a huge solar flare that caused a large EMP event that knocked out telegraph services around the world. Those telegraph systems were very crude analog systems, yet they were strongly affected by this event. If this happened today, there would be a MASSIVE disruption of human civilization. Everything runs on computers today, everything! Very few of them are shielded against EMP. They are all low voltage digital systems and they would be destroyed by an event similar to what happened in 1859. Virtually over-night we would all be living in the 1800s because none of our technology would work. Think about it. No power generating or distribution systems, no transportation, no communications, no food or medical distribution, no fresh water or sewage pumping, etc, etc, etc. For a great look at what this would do to human civilization, read the book "One Second After" sometime. It was both the more interesting and most terrifying book I have even read... and I don't scare easily!

I did say I liked you Ed. Can picture sitting on the farm drinking a warm beer with you.

That wouldn't be such a bad thing, we would get along just fine. Yep the well is still all mechanical with a very old wind mill. We still have a 1910 vintage coal wood cook stove. We certainly have enough oil lamps though we would run out of oil in six months. We heat with coal/wood and the system can by pass the pumps and work with gravity flow. No city sewage either.

No not a doomsday person just someone that has to go a few weeks each year without power do to the winter storms we get. So far we have been lucky this year.

So in the short term up to around a year we could get by. I would miss taking the wrangler for a spin, even with 2,500 gallons of gasoline I suppose nothing would run including the tractors. It has been a long time since I used draft animals, not a lot of fun. Though some say if you auto isn't running it may be ok.

I would miss my TV, love movies and the internet. Food would not be a problem though a little salty, yeah we still do some the old way.

Hey the earth could explode and the sun could burn out, unlikely but they could. I suppose those waiting for the end of the Mayan Calendar have their perspective too. But then again some people are darn sure zombies will be around in the future. Now the last one would be one heck of a black swan. We might not want to visit Western Australia.

Who knows maybe my silver would work in a pinch. I can see a lot of people being a little short on cash.

You are VERY lucky to live where you do and have the old fashioned living items you do. I have been trying to convince my family members to not much avail.

The longest we went without power was 15 days. Not much of a problem in the winter, at least you have the snow for the refrigerator. We have an old ice box in the top of the barn but I never had time to drag it out. We still have a spring that runs through the basement, even in the summer it will keep milk for a week. That was how they kept things cold in the early 1800's.

Don't get me wrong I don't want to live in the 1800's or even the 1920's. However being able to make do when so many would panic is comforting. Do you know how many things you can render from a pig or cow? There is far more than meat.

I learned how to preserve meats out of interest. It takes some work to do it right and safe and it is fun. The older farm families still carry on the traditions so at least I have some one to teach me.

I make a real good head cheese for those that know what it is.

Yes you are very lucky. Yes, I do know what head cheese is. My grandmother made it as well as pigs feet! When I was very young she still had a coal/wood stove for cooking and a coal furnace. In fact my grandfather had a coal business and delivered Ice to the train roundhouse! Lots of memories and how self sufficient people were not that long ago. Now we are dependent on society or govt or whatever it is called. Not many of us are lucky to be as self sufficient as you can be!

Yes there have been a few solar flares this past week. Sign up with nasa or space weather for updates. Along with the flares comes increased radiation as well. Keep up with consumption of minerals so your body does not absorb the radiation. I know not much radiation from this flare but the reactor in japan still has radiation that gets here still.

Why do so many people use "loose" when they mean to write "lose"? I see that error in messages every day. It even seems to be pretty consistent.

I agree, MK, you are definitely my kind of people! I think that it is great that you are so self-sufficient. Like you say, it's not easy and a lot of folks either can't or won't do it but it does have its attractions.

I'm not a farmer; just a retired chemist. I'm a decent gardener, though, and make pretty decent beer and wine. I'm not a good hunter, although I am a good shot and have hunted some. I'm a good fisherman, though, and that could come in very handy at some point.

As to the Earth or Sun blowing up... yes, those are possible but extremely unlikely. Unlike the EMP event of 1859, they have never happened. EMP has happened, therefore it CAN happen again. I'm not sure what kind of solar flare causes EMP. Apparently, not all flares do. Either that or it takes a massive flare to affect the Earth via EMP and we just haven't had any of that size in the last 150 or so years. I will be very happy if we never have one but it is a possibility that has WAY better odds of happening than many other large scale problems.

Of course, there is always man-made EMP via stratospheric nuclear explosions. This kind of attack is certainly possible... some might even say it was likely at some point. Therefore... always make sure that your tin foil hat is well grounded!

I get emails from the Coast to Coast radio show and a synopsis of the previous nights show. Last night the main topic was EMPs! They have it on their site to read if interested
