Well heres a mystery, whilst searching in the loft of the house I discovered this bizarre coin... It was actually beneath the floorboard by the wall (I live in a 16th / 17th century french farm house) any clues:? its approximately 1 1/8" in diameter and it almost looks like its been hammered into the metal because its very thin!

I believe it could a 16-17th century French imitation of a British coin made out of gold. It doesn't seem to be documented anywhere. Though I could be completely wrong, just my thoughts of what it could be.

Welcome to the forum, lockeashe!

The legends, Elizabeth Queen of England and (an attempt of) "POSUI DEU ADIUTOREM (MEUM)" (I have made God my helper) point to Elizabeth I.

No coin pictures QE1 on horseback (I suspect that would be inappropriate for a woman of those days).

The whole thing doesn't strike me as a period piece. I'd guess it was made later than 16-17 c. with a purpose of being a token or a counter of some kind. Probably it wasn't as popular as Geo III "spade guinea" counters though.

It does look to be gold, after many years under a floorboard, a brass token would be porous and deteriorated, this one is in quite great shape, nice find.

It is a brass counting jetton from Nuremberg,
H.K. stands for Hans Krauwinckel, German jetton maker.
