hello, I'm a coin newbie and was just wondering if any of you could help me out, I have a 1/2 and 1/4 very small model farthings. I have searched the web and found the exact same as mine in links that I'll post on the bottom of this comment, what I can't figure out is a price.

I did as best I could to research these coins but hit a dead end. I did manage to find out that they are model coins made by Joseph Moore. they read as the following links will show, model D 1/4 1848, with the reverse side having a head and a "V" to the left, and an "R" to the right. the other coin is the same but instead of 1/4 it says 1/2.
they are extremely tiny, and in a little better condition than the ones in the pictures, all writing is visible, I'm not an expert, I know there are grades but dare not say it is something its not, if I had to guess, fine to very fine condition. (do grades apply to model coins? just wondering for my own knowledge)

here are the links, followed by where it is located on the page

underneath "series a" it says model D 1/4 1848 on the coin.

the one next to x# 21

now my question is, does anyone know the prices of these coins?

i help my grandpa out at his antique store, but can not for the life of me, find a price online. I even searched the book, before realizing model coins are not in the world coin book, or even that it was a model coin. if any of you could help it would be much appreciated. thanks.

The bad news is - as you've discovered - being unofficial coins, you won't find model farthings and other model coins in the mainstream coin catalogues.

The good news is, they are listed in a separate catalogue, "Unusual World Coins". And because UWC has been added to the NGC database, you can find their pricing information in amongst the other British coins on the NGC website.

The other bad news is, your type of model farthing isn't listed in UWC.

The other good news is, your type of model halfpenny is listed; "X 21" is the catalogue number. So here is the value for your model halfpenny.

If I had to guess, I'd put the value of the model farthing type at about the same level - a few dollars in typical worn condition. Because it's not listed in UWC, it was probably more the "play money" type of model rather than "private pattern". You could try sarching ebay worldwide for completed sales. I couldn;t find an example of this particular type, but other model farthings typically sold in the $5 to $10 range.

The standard numismatic grading system can apply to any numismatic item - coin, token, medal or "unofficial coin".

Thank you very much, it just blows my mind to think, how much this coin has seen. I wonder how many people have seen this coin, and the events surrounding this coin, truly amazing. any coin really, just to think someone years ago had this, and in another 40-60 years when I'm dead someone else will be looking at it asking the same questions.
