I am not sure what is going on with the reverse of this 1956-D Nickel. The coin itself is in great shape, but there are a couple of things with which I need some help.

OBV & REV

Pieces are missing from Monticello and the letter 'E'

Perhaps this MM is the result of a 'die shift?'

Is there anyone one who can shed some light on this strike problem? Thank you!

Looks like a couple of contact marks and some grease on it.

Normally, I would agree with you. However, this coin came out of a sealed, mint cello.

See the two vertical lines to the left of the 'E'? They almost look like a ghost image.

Additionally, there is a faint, horizontal line running from the corner of Monticello to the bottom of the 'E'.

Grease can be in a mint set. Here is an overlay an similar (not 1956) nickel.

Those are awesome graphics! I have to learn how to do that... I am embarrassed to say that I am not sure what you are wanting me to see with the overlays?

I believe coop is suggesting a die clash. Here's an example of a fairly strong die clash on a Jefferson nickel. Notice the inverted outline of TJ's profile.

I was trying to show what the devices in the area left of the EPU could be. They don't match. Looks like the grease if causing the funny colored areas. The mark left of the E must be a very light contact mark or more grease? The other two arrow appear as contact marks. Contact marks happen in mint sets as they are just put into the holder and the proof sets are handled differently to advoind contact. They still can have marks on the proof coins as well and they usually get sent back as inferior sets.

From the look of the mintmark, it looks like a D/D/D RPM?

I couldn't find anything listed for it in CONECA or Variety Vista. Maybe it is a new one?
