I was looking at some of my not one cent coins and noticed that two of them had what looks to be 5s all above the 3 in 1863. Is this common and what would cause this?

I'm no expert, but that looks more like "ES" than "5S" to me. Maybe the initials of the engraver or the issuer?

He would sign his work with either 'E Sigel' or 'ES'
