Currently, I'm on a quest to find relatively affordable Greek/Hellenistic coins. My criteria are: $30-70 a coin, and with good strike, centering and patina. Here are some results of my research. I know which ones I like the most--any votes? I would also appreciate input from more experienced collectors--perhaps I'm missing some types that are reasonably priced? #1. On the lower end, price-wise--but nice detail! Thrace. Apollonia Pontika. AR drachm. 5-4th C. B.C. #2 Pergamon, Mysia #3 Seleucid Kingdom, Seleucus I 312 - 280 BC, AE19 #4 Syria, Seleukeia Circa 150 BC, AE22, 9.33g Syracuse, Hiketas 288-78 BC, AE20 #5 Syracuse. Agathokles. 317-289 BC. AE23 #6 Thessalian League, ca. 196-27 B.C.. AE Trichalkon (20mm, 7.58g). Edited by DVCollector 01/29/2012 3:15 pm

I know very little about Greek coins, but from your examples I think you have a nice selection.

Thanks--I'm enjoying "the hunt" as much as adding a coin to my collection. I think the Apollonia Pontika drachm is a very good deal for the type. #5 is on the higher end, but the patina is really nice.

Those are some really nice coins. I wouldn't mind owning a few. Except that I am really leery of the first coin after the discussion we had about all the fakes for this series.

This particular coin comes from a well-known/respected dealer of ancients, as for all the coins pictured. Good reputation/guaranteed authenticity--I wouldn't buy coins any other way.

The one with the eagle on the reverse is my favorite, but I also like #2 and #5. I don't know anything about these coins though, other than what I just read (and just learned) in the descriptions for each one.

Nice lot of coins I especially like the second to last coin with the bright green patina. The last coin (Thessalian League-Apollo right. Rev. ΘΕΣΣ' ΛΩΝ, Athena Itonia advancing right brandishing spear and holding shield)is also nice. All nice coins.

DVCollector: That's good hunting, and proof that the effort, which is not only enjoyable is also worth it.
This sort of 'front end work' turns an ancient Greek collection into an investment, right from the start.

The Philip II MACEDON coins-Diademed head of Apollo right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ, Horseman right are some of my favorite greek coins there are so many different reverse combinations to collect, the same thing for the silver Drachms of ILLYRICUM,DYRRHACHIUM with Cow left suckling calf Obverses-dolphins, birds, grapes, eagle, exergues.

Quote: Nice lot of coins I especially like the second to last coin with the bright green patina. I've lost count of how many bronze coins I studied, yet I never found another with such a pleasing patina--I had to get it. This coin was already a good buy; I made a -10% offer and got it! Thanks for all your feedback on the coins. I'm sure I've learned something from this effort--and will enjoy the results. Now the hard part--waiting for the mail.
