How To Start A Collection

There are only two places notes are printed, but they are issued by a dozen FR Banks.

Or you could even build a $2 type note set, collecting one or more of each type and even with star notes with each type.

Looking through that Friedberg book, will show you the different types.

And you could collect the FRNs by series and by each bank, if you wanted. The low printage ones are quite expensive though. The BEP sells some $2 series too:

As for the kind of collection you want to build, it's all up to you!
The most common collections for $2 FRN's (Federal Reserve Notes) are:
1. By Series (1976, 1995, 2003, 2003A, 2009 (maybe soon))
2. By Series/Bank (collecting one example of each bank for each of the series: 12-1976, 1-1995, 1-2003, 12-2003A)
3. By block/series (the two letter combination in the serial number. Examples: A-A, I-B)
4. Some also build a collection of star notes based on run. (refer to http://www.uspapermoney.info )

A large size note is, well, larger than a small size note. From Wikipedia, "Large-sized note": "According to the BEP, the small-sized notes measure 2.61 by 6.14 by 0.0043 inches. Large-sized notes were 3.125 by 7.4218 inches."

Also, the two letter things you have above are the Note types for each note (for lack of a better term...)
This indicates who issued the note and what it was redeemable for. This designation is usually found at the top of a dollar bill.
SC: Silver certificates. Were redeemable for silver until the 60s.
GC: Gold certificate. Were redeemable for gold until 1933.
FRN: Federal Reserve Note, issued by Federal Reserve Banks.
USN: United States Note, issued by the Government.
NBN: National Bank Note (ended in the early 30s.)

It's nice to see a new Currency collector wanting to build a collection. I just happen to have a few stacks of new
$ 2.00 bills from 1995, I cant sell you one because I haven't made enough post, but I don't think there's any rule about me "giving" you one, I've done this before and so far I haven't been told it's against the rules of the forum, so if you would send me your snail mail address in a private e mail I'll get one out to you. I'm not a dealer or anything like that just a collector like you, only trying to promote the collecting of US Paper Money.

All the Info you will need is in the "book" did you buy it yet ? ,.

It looks like you are off to a great start. Coinsearcher83 has given you some great advice and it looks like the bill collector is helping to start your collection by sending you your first $2 bill.

The advice I would give is to go your local banks and ask them for any $2 bills the may have. It most cases the will order you some if they don't have any. This way you can get $2 bills from different series, districts and blocks. You can keep the ones that are in good condition (Which most are because $2 bills don't see a lot of circulation)and simply redeposit the ones you don't. IMO this is a great way to get started until you know which direction you want your collection to take.

I have no idea what the content of that book is compared to the content of the Paper Money of the US. The Paper Money of the US book is considered the "Bible" of Paper Money collecting by most serious collectors. I think the other books would be helpful for the way you want to collect, at this point most any book would help. If you become more interested you can always buy the"Bible" later.

Am sending you your first $ 2.00 note from 1995 tomorrow, sorry I don't have any holder for it, theses are new notes right from the bank and they don't come in holders, maybe some other nice collector can send you a holder to protect it.

Did you find any holders or did one of the nice guys on the forum send a few to you. I'm getting ready to order another bunch so will have some Large and Small ones in about a week. Did you get the "book" ?.

you can get $2 bills at face value at any bank and that would be an easy way to c0ollect each branch of the series. It may take you awhile but I am sure you will find the ones you are looking for by getting them this way. within time you can even find all of them in Choice condition. I would take whatever I could find at first and then once I found one in better condition I would replace the older one with the newer one, that way you will always have that particular bill in your collection and just upgrade as you received them
