Hi all, I am going to buy a microscope and have been considering a LWS-ACH13 Archiver Stereo Microscope on the Brent-Krueger Supply website. I just read on another post about a QX5 microscope. How do they compare, what is the cost of the QX5 and where can you purchase one on line? Thx Jim

Hi Jim- I don't know alot about the subject but I have read that people like the QX5. It is reatively inexpensive. It connects to your pc via usb. I've seen images from it and it looks pretty good. I plan on purchasing one in the near future. Here is a link http://www.compuvisor.com/qx5diblmicom.html

Jim,
I bought the QX5 last year and it's okay. I am not overly impressed with it but on the other hand for $65 it will work. It hooks up to your computer and the images come up on your screen, you can then take a snap shot of the image and save it to you files. I posted a few images last week under 1964 Kennedy rolls using it.
The draw back of course is that you can't use the microscope by itself. There are no eye peices to look through. It has to be connected to you computer. The controls are not precision, focusing is not hard but the images are not as sharp as they could be. If you are just looking for something to play with, this will work. If you want something really sharp and precision this ain't it.

I completely agree with Margaret's comments concerning the QX5. I've had mine for over a year now, and I'm thinking it's time to move on. It's a blast for the money, but... I have found that it provides better results when you use external illumination, but focus remains an ongoing problem, and the field even at lowest magnification is very small.

I also agree. My QX-5 is fun but nothing compared to the stereo microscope.

What would be some other microscope options that allow you to image from your pc?

When searching for a microscope, you might want to search for a "dissecting microscope". These typically don't have the light underneath, which you won't need or use because you are looking at an opaque object. Many rely on an external lighting source that you would need to provide separately. They also tend to be cheaper than regular microscopes, although I bet you could find some pretty expensive ones.

I purchased mine from bargainmicroscopes on ebay and paid 169.00 for it. it is a very good scope I have the 10 x 30 I also got the camera for it but rarely use it as it is not that good when it comes to focus and picture size I just put my Kodak easyshare DX3700 on the scope and get very good photos I removed the lamp that came on the scope and I use an external light source that works very well for me.if you want a good scope I would not spend the money on the QX5 which is a child's toy but it do's work for some but for the money you will be much happier with a real scope Gary
