There was an issue of fake 2004 and 2005 $2 from the Montreal area about 2004. The issue was not described in detail. Most of the forgeries, and the perpetrators, were wrapped up by the police. These issues have a curved edge between the letters and the field; rifling that was done around the whole coin, and then sections were filed (almost) flat. They do not "ring". There are some mistakes in the details, but I got one and carried it around in my pocket for 4 days around Christmas time last year before I really looked at it with a magnifying glass and realized it was fake.
The new series, issued starting last year, has dates of 1996, 1952-2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006. These first showed up in and around Toronto, and later appeared in Gatineau-Ottawa, and have made it to Montreal and Toronto. They are about 3-6% of Toronto's supply, 0.5% of Ottawa's supply, and smaller amounts in Montreal and Vancouver, and other spots across Canada. These have the "cloven hoof" on the bear, 1952-2002 and 2006 with straight ends to the 9 and 6, maple leafs in different spots, sizes, and designs, and hair and jewel variations. They use the corresponding different obverse heads.
I heard one report, no pictures, of 2012, 2013, and 2014 2$ counterfeits with a poor security circle, and missing "hologram" maple leafs at the top. I am not sure whether these exist.
There was also a report of a $1 2012 coin, with a picture, which seems similar to the big series- the surface is rough, the back of the bird and the trees behind it are weak, and other smaller details are not right.
