In my very humble opinion, I would say MS63/MS64 with a possible *Star* for the rainbow.
I discounted the coin for the fairly weak strike, contact marks, what looks like contact marks in the field near the "WE," and what looks like a scratch running from the 'we' through the upper lip and across the jaw.
I do think the rainbow tone gives the coin wonderful eye appeal. I would say the reverse may grade a little higher.
Don't put to much weight in my opinion. I have a lot more to learn about grading, but I thought I would give it a shot...

I'm hesitant to give a grade because a) I'm fairly new to the hobby in a serious manner, and b) I'm learning and still have a *lot* to learn on grading, but I won't learn if I don't try here.
These pics look like scans, so its hard to get an idea on the lustre of the coin. I would agree with FlipOfACoin that its a weak stkrike.
I'm not a huge toning fan, except for the rainbow stuff, now to me, that's cool.
With the pics being scans, we'll give the benefit the doubt to having a consistent good luster. The reverse on this to me looks to be MS63 with a very weak strike of Monticello and the obverse to me looks MS60 with heavy contact marks, weak strike of Jefferson, but nice rainbow toning. Another observation to me is that the toning isn't balance from obverse to reverse.
All said, I go MS62 weak strike.
Again these are all my beginner opinions and really don't matter much, and would welcome any coaching from the better graders out here.
One question I do have is that this is the second '56 Jefferson that I've seen with a very weak Monticello strike, is the '56 Jefferson known for this?

In general, I think the 50's (and in my opinion, the 60's as well) were notoriously poor years for the nickel, concerning quality of strike, IE. Full Steps, etc...
The 1956 posted above does appear to be weak, but take a look at this BU/MS 1954 I posted a few days ago. This has to be the weakest strike I have ever seen on a coin. Period!

FlipOfACoin, Yea...this is where knowing the series is so crucial. I prolly would have passed that off as heavily worn but would have wondered at the luster that still shows. I just haven't seen that lack of detail usually in an MS example. Thanks for sharing that.

Quote: TJsCoins: BU 54 with full steps Hey, if you happen upon ANY nickel from the 1950's you think has a shot at being designated Full Steps (FS), you had better hold on to it... Better yet, you can send them to me for safe keeping!

Saw him yesterday and the subject came up again. He said it was an AU 54S FS! Said it was only 54S FS he has seen in his 40+ years of collecting and selling! Sold it for $100.00 years ago! Wonder what it would sell for now? Anyone know of a FS price guide for Jeffersons besides ebay?
