If the Red Book list a coin - G4 for $5.00 and that's the lowest the book goes on that coin but you have one that is AG3, is it safe to say that the AG3 coin is about $2.00 to $2.50?
If not then how much?

I can't imagine why going from AG3 to G4 would merit a 50% reduction in value when they're so close to the same. In my opinion you're paying for eye appeal and rarity more than grade once you get very low on the Sheldon scale.

Have you checked ebay completed listings? There might be some good data out there on current market value that RB doesn't reflect.

While there's no one mathematical formula, I'd say that for recordkeeping using 65% as an estimate of the drop from 4 to 3 would work for me. But I would hasten to add that the Red Book is the least reliable "value" estimating tool since the "values" of the 2012 book were assembled in early 2011. I always spring for a coin dealer newsletter/supplement (greysheet) just to get an idea of the real coin market--keeping in mind that dealers are only going to pay the listed amounts to each other and not a collector wandering in off the street.
