My wife lost a small diamond earring...

It is not very valuable, but has sentimental value.

We know almost exactly (within 8-10 feet) where it is, but could not find it in the grass...

I have never used a metal detector...
What are my chances for finding it if I rent or borrow a metal detector?

If you still have the other one then the chances are excelent. Most detectors have a discriminator function that can be set. So you can use the other earring to set the discriminator before you start.

Good Luck.
Maybe there is a forum member near you with a detector...

If its metal the detector will find it ,, Depending on the age, type and settings your detector has (some have preset programs that allow you to just choose a target type ) some do not have this feature and you will have to manually set the detector for what your hunting.

in a ten by ten foot area,, you may find more than just the earring !!
