Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 01/24/2007 12:15 pm A trowel is the tool used to dig the hole to retrieve whatever the detector has found,, there are several that are produced commercially from a few different materials, some metal, some are composite materials that are good for most soil compositions and help keep the digging tool from scratching what maybe a valuable rare coin or jewelry piece.
