I believe the trowel is the head of a metal detector and what he is saying is that he has a new one and cant wait to get to use it to see how good it finds those lost treasures. Atleast thats the way I read their post

A trowel is the tool used to dig the hole to retrieve whatever the detector has found,, there are several that are produced commercially from a few different materials, some metal, some are composite materials that are good for most soil compositions and help keep the digging tool from scratching what maybe a valuable rare coin or jewelry piece.
