This is actually a Roman Provincial coin of Caracalla - from the city of Nicopolis ad Istrum. They are sometimes called "Greek Imperials" but Roman Provincials is the better term.

The reverse features a personification of the river Istrus - ie, a River God

I am amazed that I came here, asked a question, and it was expertly answered. What is this - living Wikipedia? Thanks!
(I assume if the coin were rare, Bacchus2 would have mentioned it.)

Hi - I'm glad it was useful.

Rare is a difficult topic to address for Roman Provincials.

First up - value - if I saw this on ebay I'd expect it to be in the $25-$45 sort of range for value - that's without knowing anything much about it.

The two best reference books for it are Varbanov's Provincial coins of the Balkan's area series and Histova and Jekov's "Nicopolis ad Istrum" book. Both have pluses and minuses.

Now - "Rare"

For Roman Provincial coins it is usually to determine the coin identity by the actual die paring that was used to make it. This is only important to some collectors so some might think that different dies showing basicially the same thing is really the same coin - and some older references did catalogue them that way. More recent works tend to focus on the actual dies so it is possible to narrow the reference down even more - though of course that might not necessarily be important to some collectors.

With this in mind it is very possible to find a coin die paring that has never been recorded before - but that doesn't really translate to any increase in monetary value.

Condition is really king with these coins (as it is with s many others)

I hope this helps

Very interesting information indeed. Thanks. I always marvel that this kind of artifact is available for so little money. And it probably does not make fakes profitable! Makes me want to get into collecting. As for condition, I would guess on a scale 1-10 this would be 3-4. What do you think? (I realize the pros don't use numbers for grading coins. But I'm just a troll off the street...)
