I also feel that us bullion collectors are treated as second class citizens among numismatists. But I do see where they are coming from. There are a lot more history to circulation coins than there are to bullion, however rare, collectible, and beautiful the latter can be.

Agreed, Poboxw. The truly captivating thing about coin and bullion collecting, though, is that each of us can tailor our collections to be EXACTLY what WE want. I sometimes think that some collectors over-look this very important feature and get stuck on their form of collecting, as if it is the only kind of any worth. It isn't. All forms of collecting have value to someone and their choice is just as valid as anyone else's. I don't collect either copper or nickel but would never denigrate those who do. If that's their thing, more power to 'em!

I found my 2009 maples, not sealed. That's weird about the one year thing. ðŸ'½

Well the deal with the 2009 was it was the first year they placed them all in tubes instead of sealing them individually because of the shear volume of maples that they produced. Because of that, there was an out lash from bullion collectors that saw their sets of every year sealed disappear. So the mint started sealing them again but it had to be requested, otherwise, they were all sent in the tubes.

I would assume so since you can find 2012 in sheets here and there. But I'm sure you have to be an authorized dealer to request them if I understood correctly.

Hey samsnate, do you know what the premium is on sealed SMLs vs unsealed? I have a few that I want to open so I can put them in Airtites and into my display case, but I just want to make sure I'm not destroying too much value by doing that.

i would venture to guess that only a few hard to find dates will cost a pretty penny over unsealed. Both my local dealer and most major Canadian on-line dealers charge less than $1/oz difference if any at all for sealed v.s. unsealed maples.

Probably people like me will be ready to pay few bucks on top of the price, lets say $5 for the Sealed Maples (Wildlife).

So if you will sell the sealed and ex-sealed in the air-tite, I will prefer the sealed and will be ready to pay premium on them.

with the last 2 posts....the lower mintages dates, and key dates would be the only ones to really catch a good premium over the not sealed ones to a bullion stacker. However, Bullion is gaining ground in the collector world and many people are looking for them sealed and will pay a very nice premium for them. If that is the market you are targeting for selling you will find people that want it. I myself have paid a very hefty premium for about 25% of the series to have them mint sealed. Too bad that darn 2009 messed everything up.

You have to find someone whose selling sealed ones from the mint they got. I'm assuming the mint would only seal them by request for large orders

I beleive you have to be registered to buy directly from the mint. At that point you can make your request for sealed. I also imagine that you would have to make a reasonable size purchase to boot.

Thanks for the responses guys. I think I'll leave my sealed SMLs sealed. I don't want to destroy value!
