I am debating on joining PCGS or NGC and was reading their agreements for joining their service. I seriously doubt that "anyone" abides by this ;

"6. PCGS Coin Holders.
(a) If Customer breaks open any PCGS coin Holder, it shall immediately return to PCGS the PCGS certification label and shall destroy such coin Holder. Each PCGS certification label at all times shall remain the property of PCGS. If Customer comes into possession of any Holder which is not completely sealed, Customer shall immediately return such Holder to PCGS."

I seem to remember that one of the TPG was offering money (a dime?) for each return slab label. Is this still on practice?

I know a lot of people who PCGS would be upset with.
"MY LIPS ARE SEALED, PCGS! YOU'LL NEVER GET ME TO TALK! WAIT... WAIT! NOOOOOOO! PLEASE DON'T UNDERGRADE MY '09-S VDB! Ok. Ok. I'll talk. Geez..."

In the early years they offered a 50 cent bounty on the labels but they eventually stopped. From time to time they have paid the bounty to dealers returning a LOT of labels but in general the program has ended.

If I buy a slabbed coin, you bet its getting cracked and I am keeping the label.

I do not have to follow the rules of a club that I do not belong to.
Rest in Peace

Apparently, they had a three-way purpose:
  • Any dealer doing crackouts would be exposed when sending in a batch of labels which matched the coins he sent in "raw"
  • They could remove the crackouts from their pop reports
  • There wouldn't be genuine labels to put in fake slabs

As others pointed out, it would only apply to the submitter, much like the mattress tag your mom insisted on not removing.
