I have been watching this lot of coins described as "brought these back from the Middle East in 2004. I am not a coin expert or collector..." I have serious doubts about a couple of these coins. I know the saying, when in doubt stay away, but wanted your opinions anyway. Thanks

Steer clear of the whole lot--imo.
No doubt, you also noticed the two Rhodes coins (Helios obv, flower reverse)--they are exact matches, even the flans.
If real, those two would sell for $400+ a piece easy--and never part of a lot.

Five uncleaned and three fakes strike me as worth up to about $10. There was a day I would suggest buying them and making cuff links but the last shirt I had with French cuffs rotted away years ago so the lot has little appeal.

Thanks and I think both of you are correct. Except I don't think they would even make good cuff links (and I still wear them). As of this moment, the lot is selling for $11 and not worth that either. Maybe $5. Maybe.

That right there sets off all kinds of warnings in my head which I couldn't ignore. From the presence of a mediaeval Armenian coin in the mix, we can assume we're probably talking about Syria or Turkey as the origin. You can't just go to these countries, or anywhere else in the Middle East for that matter, and buy (or find) ancient coins in the street; it's illegal. The probability of you as a tourist just happening to encounter a genuine coin smuggler trying to offload their loot is zero. However, "tourist copies" of ancient coins are in abundance, and perfectly legal. If this seller is telling the truth, I'd be skeptical about the authenticity of all of them, not just the obvious fakes.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
