Lately I have been very interested in coins of the Roman Emperors between Honorius and Anastasius. And as some of you may know, even barely decent ones can be hard to come by. After almost getting a nice Marcian, I decided to look for another one that would be suitable for my collection. I found this one. I haven't bought it yet though. What are your opinions on it? And how much would you pay for it?

Though not being rare, I see them listed on ebay fairly often. They are still not easy to come by in good condtion. This coin looks to have the obverse legend readable and the reverse monogram and mint mark are fairly clear. I would try and get it for $50 to start and go as high as $90.

That's a nice find. It's hard to find a coin in this era with the legends and monogram on the flan.

Personally, unless I absolutely wanted to buy a Marcian or needed it to fill a gap, I wouldn't buy it. I looked through some of the internet sites to see how much Marcian coins have been selling. The prices are crazy IMHO for coins of poor quality. I might pay as much as $20 for this coin in this shape. It's just not worth it to me. I have recently passed on poor quality coins even though I need/want them in my collection. While echizento is correct about the legends and the reverse, I would prefer coins I can display where there is no doubt of it's origin. Like I have said before, that's my opinion and you know what they say about opinion's......

with JW. I know nothing about Marcian, but I prefer to buy fewer coins in favor for those in better condition.

My urge to have a Marcian was too strong to resist,so half of you guys will be happy for me and half will be somewhat disappointed in me when I say that I have decided to buy it. I have sent an offer to the seller and will wait on their response.

The sad part is this is one of the nicer coins I have seen in terms of the mintmark. To top that it is not the common CON mint. Without that mintmark, $20 is too much. With it, $50 may not be out of line. The question we all need to ask is do we need a $50 coin that is that ugly. Perhaps that is why I am not a 5th century fan.
