I've been waiting to receive that junk lot of coins only to get a empty mangled envelope inside another envelope with an apology. There was no coins inside at all. Probably someone stole them after the letter was mangled. I had a discussion with the seller about it and he isn't going to charge me because he agrees it was his fault. I came up with an idea to purchase a ink stamp that will say "NON-MACHINABLE". That should help any coins make their way, assuming that he gets one. Oh well.... These coins are gone forever even though they were a junk lot, I still liked the coins.

Ouch! I have been buying 'cleaned' coins lately, after trying my hand at the uncleaned lots and most of them are sent in a flat, sealed cardboard container, slipped inside an envelope that it took my pen knife to open. Maybe that isn't a practical way to send 20-30 coins, but it sure was hard to get to the coins I ordered. Just a thought.

Yes, I told the seller that isn't the proper way to ship that many coins. He told me that since it was bubbled wrapped on the inside, he thought that would be good enough. He said he sent a lot of lots like this before.

That is a nasty surprise, sorry that happened. One doesn't expect that outcome when purchasing an item and a refund at the end. It is startling the number of e-Bay/online sellers that continue to send coins through the mail in unsecured paper envelopes in the hopes it gets there intact because they can skimp on the shipping fees. It's playing Russian roulette with a buyer's merchandise, which responsible sellers would not do.

Sorry for your loss Gil-galad,
I've never had this happen, they definitely shouldn't send coins in that kind of envelope. There are two coins I ordered back in Oct.(total 75.00 plus S&H) that have never made it.
I still have a little hope though...... but it's fading.

Really? So you'll lead the charge to drop $10 at the local ship center to ship a $5 coin, right?

Ouch is right--that's a real shame you'll never get to work on these. At least the seller took responsibility here--that many loose coins should have been sent in a small box, packed with padding. But, anyone who's bought a coin from me knows what a nut I'm about secure packaging.

I'm still missing a coin from Portugal I ordered back around October as well. I've given up and the seller has refunded my money. Thing is, I wanted the coin! A couple of years ago I purchased an Anastasius Half Follis. It came broken into two pieces. I received a refund, but what a shame. A coin survives 1600 years only to have the post office mangle it. I'm sorry for your loss even though you say they were poor quality coins. You'll never know what might have been in that lot.

Quote: I came up with an idea to purchase a ink stamp that will say "NON-MACHINABLE". I frequently ship inexpensive coins in a First Class envelope but the coin is protected by a corrugated self-adhesive coin mailer and I also use a red NON-MACHINABLE stamp per postal regulations for non-machinable items(don't forget the 20 cent surcharge!). Out of a couple hundred shipments in this manner, I have not had a single loss. If the coin mailer were to ever get separated from the envelope, I also have my bases covered there with a return address label on the outside of the coin mailer. http://www.melrosestampco.com/servl...etail?no=383

Ouch... Sorry to hear that happen gil-galad. A lot of them looked like they were going to clean up nicely.
I also have my story of disappointment today. I ordered a coin of an emperor I really wanted, in nice shape too, considering the time period it was from. Last week I got a wrong coin of that emperor, that they happened to have had listed also (and it also happened to be in worse shape than the one I ordered). I informed the seller and not long later I dropped it in the mail to send back. And just today I got an email from the seller stating that he couldn't find the original coin I ordered, and so he was going to give me a refund. So I was pretty let down by that news. But the seller said he has no record of selling it, so maybe, maybe there is still a bit of hope that he may find it.

Oh well.. I figured as a long shot, I would try to contact the postal service to see if I could get any results. I went around several departments and also asked to talk to the postmaster (not going to happen I know). When I mentioned the postmaster, they started being more helpful.
I got a number to call this other department that handles lost stuff. They don't open up until later, so that's when I shall call. I know it's a long shot, but hey, I might get lucky.
Although, the coins could have been lost anywhere down the line.
