My daughter found this in the school playground and gave it to me so I could see if I needed this "penny" for my collection. Any ideas what could have happened or is a different metal?

That is possibly an alloy problem. Member SPP has been researching some of these, might want to shoot him a message.

Is it evenly brown all over including the rims?

It is also possible it was dug up from a Metal detectorist. The discription sounds like some I've found.

Is there a chance you can get a weight for it? A 1983 nickel should weigh aprox 4.54G. Can you post a pic of the Obverse as well. The striking of the reverse looks fine. Fairly sharp details for the age. It is most likely the result of environmental effects that caused the color change. As stated above...I have also recovered several coins that have drastic color change from being exposed to the elements or buried in the ground. The soils PH level and mineralization come in to affect.

Same here...sounds like rust. I dug up some 53's that were rusting away...that's another story.

my smallest scale is a 12 kg max model which is supposed to be acurate to 1/2 gram and is legal for trade however it's lowest increment is 1 gram and it bounced between 4 and 5 grams before settling on 4. I'll have to order a jem scale I need one for my loose jem collection anyway and this is a good as an excuse as i'll get.

with Biokemist6. This particular year was 75% copper, and has probably reacted with soil chemistry.

There are many examples of "Brown nickels" from that date run.....82-86. Copper content too high.

I suspect that the surface metals have been preferentially attacked, leaving a brown cast, and thereby leaving a copper enriched surface.

I agree with enviromental damage. I find these all the time when metal detecting. Here's one of mine:
