On the 1870 5 cent coin in the Charlton 2012 catalogue on page 78 & 79 it shows the flared crown and straight crown. I have attached pictures of the crowns from their catalogue to show those who may not have one..

My question is: What and where are the difference that I should be looking at on the crown to determine which is which? ( I have a 1870 5 cent coming in the mail and would like to know what one it is)....Thanks in advance..

From what I can see with the reference pics you posted. The flared crown is narrower at the top and wider at the base of the cross & on the straight crown the cross is the same thickness throughout. If you were to draw a line following each side of the 2 crosses...the straight crowns lines would be vertical and the flared crown lines would not be. The flared crown is also closer to the rim denticles then the straight crown. The flared crowns rim also seems to be significantly thicker/wider the the straight crown. It just maybe my eyes but the denticles on the flared crown seem longer then the straight crown as well.

Just my uneducated opinion. :)

It pays to ask....Good point guys..

cladhunter13....You are correct on all points...

The flared ( I think for my reference I'm going to call it tapered) as you pointed out, and it is closer to the rim as this is associated with the Flat (Wide) rim and the straight is associated with the Raised (Narrow) rim.

I looked at these a 100 times and just couldn't nail it...Thanks again...

Doesn't the flared crown always and only appear with wide rims? If so,you need look no further than the rims for ID.

Yep, rims are idenitifier and then you check out the crown , reason is that crowns aren't usually in as nice a shape as these, normal finds are often G/VG grades makes it tougher.

Good info. I was unaware that the tapered/flared crown only appears on the wide rim. As always...learning something new every day.
