my parents are getting me a gift for easter... rather than getting me a bike, etc. Should I get the "War of 1812 commerative set"? or should I just ask for other items, like papermoney, silver dollars or other bullion? At $224 dollars is this a good price for it? and how much silver is in the set? thanks

If I was at that level of expenditure and I didn't have an ongoing collection of proof mint sets, I'd be far more inclined to pick up a selection of other items.

Things that come to mind
A series of world bullion coins, some are amazing, the Panda's are superb. A selection of uncirculated fifty cent pieces for the 50's can be had for that much. 224 would fill in the 50's and 60 in unc ten cents, 224 would also buy a couple nice AU/UNC 1937 bank notes or sequential series of 1954's.

I have nothing against the sets except I think they are overpriced, they are nice, but so is raspberry jam.

investment-wise i'd suggest bullion. The 1812 set is very nice but I don't see it appreciating much from $224. But, as a collector, it's really up to where your heart lies
Rest in Peace

If you really like the proof set, go for it. At $224, it's not cheap, but it is nice. There are all kinds of collectors, some only like to collect silver dollars and nothing else. The important thing is what you like.

From what I gathered in the "Post your Paper Money Collections" thread, you have just started your paper money collection, and seem to be really enjoying it. (It is a great hobby, and very addicting) I would suggest that you buy some more paper money, and expand you collection.

Whatever you try to collect, pinch yourself every so often to give yourself direction. My number one flaw is that I can go off course very easily. Thankfully, I have a wife to keep me on course.
