I watched the show Dirty Jobs the other day and almost went into a full seizure! They were at a hotel in San Fransisco. This hotel cleans ALL the coins it gives to its guests. I almost fell off the couch They put them in an old silver cleaning machine with borax and steel BB's and shook them around for a few hours. I couldnt belive my eyes. Just thought I would share this horror with all of you. Did anyone else see this?

Maybe true but try to remember that most stuff you see on TV is there to intertain you. So much is just for that purpose and in no way real but sure gets people to watch. As an example, remember that show called Lost? Ever wonder why they just didn't ask all the people running the cameras to take them home?

They say they have been doing it since the 30's because the coins would make that ladies white gloves dirty

I think it's kinda cool. Although I can't imagine how many coins a hotel give out these days, even if it has a restaurant and bar. I'd think it would be cheaper to buy new coin from the bank, and just dump any coins that come in at the bank like us copper hoarders do. If I was cleaning my coins, I'd also iron and starch the bills before they went out. lol
And remember you guys who cringe, every coin they polish into a slick makes your graded coin that much more valuable. ;)

I wonder how many of the "cleaned but retoning" coins we handle today were the subjects of this practice back in the day?

You can bet he removes any silver.
We have one of those counter/sorters, almost identical. Does 8 coins a second, simultaneously sorting cents through halves. Got it when JC Penneys moved. Spotted it in the closed store and asked if it was for sale. They guy told me who to see the next day. I told him I'd give fifty bucks for it.
The next day, I asked the new guy if it was for sale. "Is it worth $15?" Darn straight, mate!

We also have a straight counter (30 cps) like the one shown at the very beginning. Local bank was pitching it, repairs cost 37¢.

That was pretty awesome actually. The St. Francis is an amazing old hotel, I've stayed there a few times, and it's a true San Fransisco landmark. The part about telling the FBI agent he laundered money was funny. Thanks for posting this gem of a story LincolnGuy!

The more I think about it the more I remember never using cash in a Hotel or Motel. Always normally just charge the entire bill. Guess a long time ago, prior to credit cards, cash was used all the time but today, I would think the majority of people use plastic. Sort of like those reality shows being real. Or every car looks like the ones in the commercials. My famorite absolutely true to life commvercials are the ones that show Cheeseburgers at McDonals. Guess I'm the only one that gets them about half what they show. And Enterprize picks you up. Wonder why I had to drive to one to rent a car. They told me no drivers were available. TV shows are supposed to be for intertainment, not reality. Wonder why they didn't wash all the bills. And at the check out counter imagine all the germs there. You'ld think they'ld power wash that each day.

Quote: Wonder why they didn't wash all the bills. Good point, especially since most coinage metals contain natural antibiotics, and paper money is naturally germ filled.
