hello, I have uploaded several pictures of a silver 1949 Wheat cent I found. I know this is chemically altered. Pretty cool though. I believe the "in god we trust" is dd too. Let me know what you think

unholyroller, that may be true but this extends throughout the whole "in god we trust" on the top, with no rim damage. something would have to hit it perfectly throughout. I'm doubting this.

Lincoln Cent guy, I know this isn't silver, its silver in color. I should have been more clear

Lincolnguy, I'm not sure. the side of the rims are copper color, the face and reverse are silver color. My guess no. plating normally takes place in a chemical bath, so if it was plated the whole coin would be plated. Juyst my guess though. I wonder what would turn copper silverish...?

Well, I think that if it is a mint damage, it must be some kind of an error die or strike. Could itbe a PMD?

Regardless of what caused the doubling on the 49, value has now been ruined by the plating.

Unfortunately I have to agree with that. I say unfortunately since I think it was actually areal doubled die. It is odd that so much of the top is doubled but not the rest of the coin. Usualy with that much doubled on the top, the rest should have had some also. It is possible that someone wanted to preserve what they thought was a rare doubled die coin by plating it.
I think we really need better photos anyway. Those are just to blurry.

It is plated or painted? Since the numismatic value is ruined anyways, toss it in acetone and see if it clears up.

Otherwise, you have a very curious oddity that's kinda fun to look at anyways.
