In what year does a Jefferson nickel with a "S" mint mark start meaning it is a proof?

1971 is the year when the San Francisco mint started making nickels exclusively as proofs.

In '68, '69, and '70, business strikes were made there as well as proofs.

I found a 69 Jefferson with a "S" mint mark that has been in circulation for a while but has some cameo so I didn't know if it was a proof or just a nice business strike. Is there any real way to know?
Rest in Peace

I too have a 1969 s that looks like a proof but I'm really not sure. I've just decided that it is...

Are the obverse and reverse rim edges sharp and flat or sort of rounded off?
