Hi everebody I'd like to show you this coin,I think is:
Justin I, AE Pentanummium, 512-518 AD, Constantinople. DN IVSTINVS PP AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / Large chi-rho, officina letter to left, value letter epsilon (5) to right.
weinght 1.93g,diameter 13/14mm
I think it's an interesting coin, especially for the monogram of Christ on the reverse, and maybe is fairly well preserved.
What do you think?I have only this coin with this monogram;after all I see this coin is very similar to late roman empire coins like AE4 of Honorius ,Arcadius or Valentinian, but this is byzantine.I'm very interested in byzantine coins.
thanks

It is Justin I Sear# 77, officinae B. What's interseting about this coin is under the CHI-RHO to the right there appears to be a small cross. I'm not able to find a listing for that, so it may be an unlisted variant. Very nicely struck small coin.

Hi echizento and thanks for reply,to be honest having the coin in hand and looking with a lens I'm not able to understand if is really a little cross....it can be even effects given by differences in level and signs of aging on the coin....or perhaps deposits....?

From the image you posted, echizento is correct. I think I too see a cross. Regardless if it is just the lighting or deposits, this is a very nice coin for this period.

I like the bust and the chi-rho on the back nice coin. Many of these coins where re-struck over another coin so maybe that is what we are seeing. Great pickup.

new pics under another light increasing details on the coin but the little cross is always visible...the doubt remain...I can't find news or references online about this strange cross....

Again, nice coin! I have always liked coins with big Chi-Rhos on the reverse. Now I'm tempted to get one, but Byzantine like yours.
