Hi All - I hope this isn't a stupid question: I'm a low-key collector that recently inherited a set of 1980 Moscow Olympic commemorative coins. The set is contained in an original leather album that has pages with holes for the
plastic-cased coins. The whole set is generally in good shape, but several coins have had some tarnishing because they fell out of the cases and sat on top of each other for years in storage.
I've put the set back together, but several of the holders
simply won't stay together to keep the coins protected. Is there anything that I can do here? I don't want to alter the original packaging, but I also want to make sure that the coins are protected for future decades... I'm not sure about the proper protocol here among serious collectors.
I want to keep these for my children, so any help is much appreciated!
-Tom

Strictly for aesthetics, you should be able to get capsules from a dealer who scraps the coins.

Thanks for the reply - But I'm not sure that I understand. Should I be concerned about exposure of the coin? Are you suggesting that I just grab some cheap covers that actually stay closed because it isn't something to be concerned about?
Many thanks again.

This is a tough dilemma. Air-tite capsules would be much better for the coins, but you would have to sacrifice the original packaging...

Silver WILL tarnish when exposed because of the air's sulphur content, so from a long-term perspective, the coins will be more attractive (and probably more valuable) if stored in air-tites.

It really depends on how much you enjoy the original packaging and flipping through it. If you REALLY like it, then just leave the coins as is, and make sure to store the album in a place with low humidity and constant temperature.

Get some NON-PVC 2x2 "flips" or some NON-PVC tiny plastic bags for coins and put the coins in them and in what ever album they came from.

This stuff is cheap off the internet in quantity (google the above terms) or better yet stop by your local coin shop for a few.
