Must admit I gave up on trying to read the obv legend, going back to it after Dougs post I can see what could be 'IANVS', I dont think the first picture is flipped.
Guess we need to wait for info or bigger pics from texfischer.

Did you get a chance to measure the coin texfischer? I fiddled about with the pictures you posted and it looks very likely its Maximian rather than Maximinus as Doug suggested. I dont think its Galerius. I still think its a quarter follis so it should be around 20mm in diameter and weigh about 2 grams. I would guess at the legend being 'IMP CMA MAXIMIANVS AVG' perhaps with 'PF' before 'AVG'. If the above assumptions are correct it will have been minted in Siscia in 305AD, if not we will need to think again  If it is the QF I think it is it is rated in RIC as rarity R3, RIC considered all of these QF coins rare but finds since the book was written have altered most peoples perceptions of this. Even today you will find a wide price range on the 13 know QF coins, look at the price gap on the following two on ebay: [eBayItem]170779056491[/eBayItem] [eBayItem]280754716209[/eBayItem] |

I measured it at its widest point, and it is exactly 17 mm.

In truth for someone to ID it as Maximinus I they were way off! It could certainly have been Maximinus II as it can be hard to tell these two (Maximinus II and Maximian) apart if the legends are not clear. Their names and bust styles are similar and they were both shown on QF coins from Siscia in 305AD. Depending on the full obverse legend (with or without ' PF' towards the end) it is one of the following two coins: IMP CMA MAXIMIANVS PF AVG - Right, laureate. GENIO POP-VLI ROMANI - Genius standing left, modius on head holding patera, cornucopiae. SIS in exerge - Minted 305AD in Siscia (Modern day Croatia). RIC VI Siscia 146 - Rated R2 for rarity. IMP CMA MAXIMIANVS AVG - Right, laureate. GENIO POP-VLI ROMANI - Genius standing left, modius on head holding patera, cornucopiae. SIS in exerge - Minted 305AD in Siscia (Modern day Croatia). RIC VI Siscia 147 - Rated R3 for rarity. You can probably tell in hand which legend looks the more likely. |

Looks like :RIC 171b MAXIMINUS II Quarter follis Rev. GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, SIS in exergue. Mint of Siscia.
