Hi, I'll be the first to admit, I am entirely clueless about foreign or ancient coins. I bout this several years ago, when I was 9ish, I dont remember exactly how much I paid for it, I know at the time it was a small fortune to me, probably around $50.

It is in a case with a little paper that says:

"Maximinus 1, 235-238 AD."
"this is to certify blah blah blah...

I was just wondering how much it is worth and such, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Oh, shoot! The Maximus Invisibilis variety? I know I have one of those somewhere but I just can't seem to find it.

Here are the photos, unfortunately, it wasn't of the Invisibilis variety, it's a shame, I hear they're hard to find

The image is still too small to make out the legend; however, the style of the portrait looks more like Maximinus II Daia to me. See if you can enlarge the image and re-post. The reverse looks interesting.

Hello texfischer, your coin is Maximinus II not I, he ruled from 305-312AD first as Caesar and then as Augustus.

I was scratching my head for quite a while trying to work out what the reverse was and I think you have the picture 'flipped'. I flipped it back an here is the result:

Maximinus-1

I cant tell if your mintmark is 'ST' or 'SIS' or something completely different, maybe you can tell with the coin in hand? The rest of the reverse text should read 'GENIO POPVLI ROMANI'.

$50 is a lot for a coin in this condition, but not a 'rip-off', perhaps if we can 100% ID it we can see if it is considered a rarity.

Let us know if you can read any of the text and also, is the coin 30ish mm or 20ish mm? If your coin is the smaller of the two measurements it could be a quarter follis rather than a full follis, these used to be considered rare, not so much today but could explain why its price was high when you bought it.

No wonder it looked interesting. Good catch. I'll be interested if there is a readable mintmark and the size of the coin.

Me too - gut feeling is this is a quarter follis from Siscia bought before a load were found in Eastern Europe, that could explain the price.

No offense, but how many 9 year olds have $50 laying around to spend on anything let alone an ancient coin.

Price could be explained by an unscrupulous dealer seeing an easy opportunity.

And even if there was a parent around, most parents today have a hard enough time helping their children with their 4th grade math, let alone trying to help them ascertain the value of an ancient coin.

Regards,

-Kurt

I'm reasonably sure I see MAXIMIANVS rather than MAXIMINVS but I cant make out what follows or preceeds so I'm not sure if it is Maximianus or Galerius. If it can be IDed for certain to either it is a $10 coin in that condition but if not clearly identifiable it is less.
