It is hard to get the image to show it well, but this roll find I got today has absolute mirror fields. Being that there was no SMS set in 68 and this being a Denver minted coin, what do I have here?
Doubtful on the polish. The reverse is just as nice as the obverse. There is way too much fine detail on the reverse to polish it to a mirror finish and not round over or buff out the fine details. Even the strike quality seems deeper than most. There is absolutely no evidence of polishing, that I can assure you.
If it lacks the hairlines associated with polishing then it may simply be a late die state coin, struck by a die pair that was polished by striking thousands of planchets. This is the mechanism that created the PL UHRDE coins. The mint polished the die surface and as the die wore the hairlines disappeared and smooth fields were created.
