Recently purchased a few of these delightful coins. A couple of them are, in my view, in splendid condition. Would I increase the value by having them slabbed by PCGS or should I just sell them with large scans and let the buyer decide the condition? Have attached scans of one of the coins Any opinions on the grade would be most welcome.

Welcome to the forums Are they all 1862's? If so I would say they do not warrant any 3rd party grading. They do not really jump in value significantly until you get to MS 60+ grades which this does not appear to be. Can you post photo's, to be honest, the scan makes it look....um...not so good..IMO

I have a similar quality 1862, a few poorer 1853 specimens and and an 1849. Afraid my skills with a camera are limited so I tend to scan. Just interested to know what grade they might be and whether they were worth slabbing.

You should post scans of the other coins as well. This one appears to be in the lower AU range, although the scans don't do the coin any justice.

I would think TPG would help, due to the high premium over melt.

I'm no expert on $1 gold, but I don't like the surfaces on either.

Ever weigh them? They should be around 25.8 grains (1.7 grams). And I don't think slabbing would increase their value at all at those grades. And I'm not a fan of PCGS either, so they wouldn't be my choice, if I were to slab anything.

I am worried about the surfaces also, I am not saying its fake but something seems to make me think something is off with this coin. I hope its just the photograph but I would definitely weigh these things as soon as possible

Very interesting observations, thank you. The concensus is that it is not worth grading which I accept. My concern now is whether it is fake. I have weighed the coin at 1.7 grams and the diameter is 14.3 mm. I have uploaded another photograph which may help. I bought them from a bullion dealer at spot + 3% (about $85US) a couple of weeks ago and he has offered a full refund and undertaken to melt them so it's not a problem if they are fakes. Any further views would be most welcome.

Like the others, I have my concerns. I am not an expert on this series but the surface looks bubbly and lettering looks a bit mushy.

I am no expert of the series either but its good that you got them from a trustworthy source either way. even in the new pictures I can not say with any confidence that the coin is authentic, one good thing is that the weight is correct so chances are in your favor. With me not knowing the series well enough to really comment by looking at the photographs I will leave this to the ones that do know the series better. Its still good news that the weight is correct though
