Hello All - A few days ago, I had started a thread about my excitement for finding a newer seller with inferior pictures, and I was picking up what I thought were safe coins, commemorative coins from the US Mint. There were also two polar year coins that went below market. First - the polar year coins. Both look to be in great shape, both in a polar year case. One had a few cracks in the case. I could tell that both had been out of the case, so I opened them up and weighed them. The North Korean coin was spot on, at 20 grams. The French coin was supposed to be 22 grams, and came up as 20. I tried it a few times, but I am also using a $20 postal calculator that I bought off of ebay. Should I be concerned? Second - The batch of commemoratives were all in their cases, with boxes and COA's. The concern here is that most of them have been opened, a few cracks and many of the coins have a has on the field of the coin. I went back and looked at the description, and the basic information was listed. Nothing about condition. What would you guys do? I am mostly concerned about the weight being off on the Polar Year Coin. Thanks in advance.

Indeed I did. I even checked the setting on kilograms.

I looked at the coin under a loupe, and the letters seem to be unevenly colored, Going to send this one, and probably the entire purchase back.

I count on my USPS scale to be pretty accurate. Discovering one coin weighs what it's supposed to weigh and another doesn't weigh what it's supposed to weigh would bring me to one conclusion:
one of the coins doesn't weigh what it's supposed to weigh.

Would you get the postage back too? I'd suggest if you do have it insured and send in such a way it is signed for at each step of the way. To easy for a suspect order to get lost ih the mail. Yet prior to sending it all back, if there is a coin store in your area, you may want to take them all there and ask what they think.

Thanks all - Stopped by my local coin dealer today. I learned two things. 1 - I am paranoid 2 - My ebay postage scale is not accurate He checked both of them out, and gave the thumbs up. The issue with the letters was from a film build up, he showed me how to remove that. Looks great!

I don't understand how a scale can weigh one coin correct and another one wrong. Seems both coins should be off on a bad scale not one or the other

I am guessing that the scale is just not accurate enough, and would round up or down to the nearest tenth of a kilogram (or tens unit of a gram). The one coin was supposed to be 20 grams, and was showing as 20. The second was supposed to be 22.25 grams and was showing as 20 grams as well.
Its not a great scale, which was my initial concern. It does its job for postage, and goes up to 60 pounds.

What kind of scale is it? If you use it for weighing postal items I suggest getting a separate one for coins. My scale has a capacity of 100g and is accurate to .01g so that might be a better route to weigh coins. better accuracy than a scale that weighs heavier items?
