Two more of my most recent acquisitions. The first is a Denarius of Severus Alexander, RIC 83, struck 228 AD: OBV: IMP SEV ALEXAND AVG, laureate head right REV: P M TR P VII COS II P P, Mars standing right, holding shield and spear 2.8g; 19 mm The second is a Denarius of Elagabalus, RIC 137, struck 219 AD: OBV: IMP CAES ANTONINVS AVG, radiate draped bust right REV: SALVS ANTONINI AVG, Salus standing right, feeding serpent from patera 3.28g, 18mm There was a thread some time ago about how many coins have better obverse's than reverse's. What makes this coin very interesting is the reverse is nicer than the obverse. The detail of the reverse is what made me buy this coin.

Two very nice coins. Excellent bust of Severus Alexander.

You know how to pick them--nicely centered, detailed coins. The reverse on the Elagabalus is really clean. That die looks less worn than the obverse.

The denarii of Elagabalus and Severus Alexander are fairly essy to obtain in nice condition. However, these are much nicer than what are usually encountered.

Quote: Where did you buy these two from? I bought these from a trusted dealer in Cambridge, UK. Several of my nicer coins have come from her. If you are interested in this dealer's identity, send me a Private Message and I'll be glad to steer you her way. She has been honest and responsible in all our transactions.

Thats ok JW. I was just curious. I already have too many places I buy coins from. It would probably just end up with me spending more money than I should! :)

What do old coins like this even value at?

Each coin was under $40 including shipping, but only barely. However, I think I got them at pretty good prices when considering the grade of each coin. If these coins were being sold outright by any dealer on Vcoins, I would suspect the price of each coin would double what I paid.

I just checked the prices on Vcoins. For coins in this condition the dealers there are asking from $130 to $280. So I guess I did get these at good prices. I have bought from this dealer several times, and have never been disappointed in the product vs the image and description.

Very nice coins JW! Especially for the price. I usually do not buy individual coins online because I have coin shops with ancients in my area. Which is great! Only the price is usually not:(
