Hi,
Looking in my Jefferson Album I noticed slots (total of 4)for the 1942 nickel. Why the 1942? Is this coin without the mint mark?

1942, 1942 P, D, S
Thanks.

From October 8,1942-1945 the P mint appeared for the first time on any US coin.

This was an exception during wartime,in 1946 the nickel composition and mintmark went back to the way it was before.

the 1942 and 1942D were the prewar version of the coin. the 1942P and 1942 S were the Wartime Silver Alloy coins (1942 - 1945)

So then I need to look out for the 1942 ( no mint mark) as well as the 1942 P, D S?

If you see a large mint mark on the reverse of the nickel it is a copper-silver-manganese. I believe the approximate of silver content is .33. If it has a small mint mark on the obverse then it is a copper-nickel compound.

Sorry, but that is wrong, the small or large mint mark was on the REVERSE until I think 1968, when they moved it to the obverse. It is to the right of the building for the small, and above the dome for the large.

Four coins:

Pre war comp
1942-no mm
1942D-small"D"mm located on reverse to the right of Montcello

War years comp
1942P-large "P"mm on reverse over Dome of Monticello
I believe this was the first time the "P"mm was ever put
on a US Coin.

1942S-Large "S"mm on reverse over Dome of Monticeelo

hope this helps
