Did anyone else get the e-mail from the mint which I just received -- regaring how, starting Jan. 23, special Presidential dollar programs will be held in 10 United States cities? One of the highlights will be to hold a Presidential dollar way before it's released to the public, and get your picture taken while holding it. The "holding" part seems a little silly, but if one of the 10 cities were closer, I would probably go. Closest city to me having the special events is Houston, and that's much too far to travel in order to hold the dollar!

Atlanta Pittsburgh Charlotte Chicago Detroit Dallas Boston Tampa Hartford I live in western Colorado, and was a bit surprised my part of the country was left out. One would think that either Denver or Salt Lake City might have been choosen.

Well I am at a loss why the Mint would even bother with such a program? Coin collectors WANT coins for their private colletions and seeing how these are NOT 1933 St. Gaudens $20 gold pieces why in the world would anyone want to have their picture taken with them? These coins will be mass produced and they (the Mint and Federal Reserve) will be darn lucky to push them off on most banks as they have NO desire to have them in their inventory? In my humble opinion this program has no appeal what so ever and I can't help but wonder about the Mint's management thought process? Maybe these cities have mass transit that will use the dollar coin? I would rather go out west and hold a buffalo chip with Old Dan! Now that would be a photo worthy of keeping!

Let me see.. 90 miles to Chicago, toll fees, slick roads, terrible traffic, crowds, etc.. But then I may get a chance to hold the rare, never seen Sac, excuse me, pres dollar which might just make it worth the bother!
I'll pass. I think I'll stay home and do something more exciting like trim my toenails.

George Washington will be available with his dollar in Houston on Wednesday at Poe Elementary and the Galleria. The Houston Chronicle has an article about it today with a photo of the actual coins in hand.

Terry, On questioning the mint's management thought process, it can be summed up in one word-MONEY. Whatever it takes by all means make it!

I would think that Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco would be three of the cities on that list. It would be nice for me, if New York were also on the list. The closest city to me is Hartford, which is two states away.

Here is the link to the article in Houston Texas . Looking at other newspapers for the other states. Doesn't give a precise address. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl...4484640.html$1000.00 minunum is the amount a bank has to order at a time. Larger orders can be made though only in increments of $2000.00 Will be able to purchase a $1000.00 box of $25.00 rolls of coins. The link below is information that the banks receive about ordering the new coins from the federal reserve. May copy it and share it with your bank if they know nothing about the oredering process of financial institutions. http://www.frbservices.org/FedFlash...sh120106.pdf

There is not a snowball's chance in_______ my bank will EVER order a thousand dollars worth of coins they DON'T want. I have already tried paying up front for Sacagawea's and there answer is always NO WAY as they are afraid they will end up getting them back! Looks like I will have to count on my friends here to get them at face value for collectors in Europe, Australia and, of course my house!!!
