Some amazing early US notes, Colonials, Large sizes, Small sizes, Silver Certificates, Gold Certificates, etc. in the Pre-Long Beach Auction Catalogs. I got them for purposes of the early US copper, but I think I like some of these notes, too. The notes seem to have some really high estimates, too.

I am thinking of trying to get a note or two, but not any of the incredibly expensive ones.

You are on the right track, my friend. Notes are good. If you have any doubts, just remember you can never go wrong when buying Uncirculated notes, or star notes. They retain their value quite well. If your buying expensive circulated notes, stay away from the ripped, torn, or written on ones. Even if they are quite a bit cheeper, your almost always better off buying a better grade of one.
