Poll Question
I am looking to purchase a large cent book, and would like the most comprehensive one available. From what I've read, there are really three main choices: Sheldon, Breen, or Noyes. I would like to be able to attribute varieties so I when I submit coins the appropriate attribution will show up on the slab. Thanks for your thoughts!

Regards,
~neuron

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I am particularly interested in large cents from 1793-1814.

Large Cents are generally attributed by Newcomb variety. Sheldon is a good start, but these also need to be on the list:

"United States Copper Cents 1816-1857" by Howard R. Newcomb

"Attribution Guide For United States Large Cents 1840-1857", 2nd edition by J.R. Grellman and Jules Reiver

Thanks, SuperDave. I forgot to mention that I am particularly interested in the 1793-1814 cents. Given that little bit of important information, what do you think? I'll definitely keep the books you mentioned in mind for a later purchase.

Sheldon and Noyes, then. Sheldon first.

Well, I have a bit different advice. I'd skip Sheldon altogether, don't bother with Breen, and get the two book set by Noyes for starters. It'll set you back about $240, but it's well worth the price. Noyes is the most up-to-date for the early LCs (1793-1814). Plus, you'll have a very good start on the remainder of the LCs with the second volume of Noyes when those grab your attention. When you develop an interest in the middle dates and late dates, let me know because I have a couple of other essential book titles you'll want at that point in time

I'm afraid I can't give advice on what books to buy in regards to the large cents, but I do like them - especially the early ones (that I can afford). I've only got 22 of them, with the earliest date being 1802. I associate them with the early years of our country, and that's what fascinates me about them.

I love my Sheldon books, but I definitely think that the Grellman book needs to be included in the list above. I use these books in tandem.

Since you are mainly interested in the earlier ones, I feel that Penny Whimsy would be the way to go. I do not own the Noyes books, so I can't give an opinion on them, though I do tend to be guided by Sap's opinions.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've ordered Sheldon for now, and will try to find Noyes at a reasonable price. I'll check out Grellman, too... haven't come across that one so far.

And AuldFartte, thanks for the offer- I'll likely be in touch at some point for further advice!
