Seeking my first high quality Numismatic coin, I decided to bid on an auction for a "2012 P GILT SILVER DRAGON S$1 ONE OZ. NGC MS 70 COIN" yesterday. After reaching a bid level of $170, my hoarder mentality compelled me to let it go.

The auction ended at $178.50 with shipping an extra charge!

Most of these Gilt Proofs will likely fetch a MS70 rating from NGC because of the care taken to mint them. Right?

I am seeking advice on this particular type of coin, do you think these 2012 1 ounce Dragon's at MS 70 are high now due to their new arrival on the market or is this really going to be a scarce item?

Would you pay this much?

Thanks, I bought an ATB instead.

Four more oz. with the ATB coin well done an better move! My gut says stay away from those, even though there are many out there that will pay that an beyond for similar graded silver....

Yeah I stay way from proof silver. Too easy for spots to show up later, even in slabs.

Milk spots right? I was reading another forum the other day and saw that the new Canadian Polar Bear $20 coins are developing milk spots too.

What is causing this to happen?

What exactly causes the milky spots remain unknown at the moment. Speculation is that residue from chemicals used in the finishing process causes them, and anecdotal evidence suggests that oils (from hands) will do the same. It's not just the Canadian coins either. I've seen the white spots on philharmonikers, elephants, and other silver rounds alike.

I'm still all for proofs as long as the price is not ridiculous. Slabbing proof and other bullion coins, on the other hand, makes absolutely no sense to me.
