I got this one in an uncleaned lot a couple of weeks ago, but I can't ID it at all since the lettering is weak and some of the patina is flaking off. The reverse is very hard to make out, but I think that I see a mint mark that is "MSA," and the bust appears to be female. But this is just a wild guess on my part. Any help would be appreciated!

Can't tell much at this point, needs to be cleaned up a bit.

With the patina peeling away, cleaning is going to be problematic, I imagine.

Yes, this is a tough one to figure out. The Obverse is much clearer in hand, but I cannot read any lettering. Any guesses as to the mint? Is MSA London?

OK, big update. A good soak in water and hydrogen peroxide have revealed the letters "EUDOX..". So a quick wildwinds search has yielded info that this is in fact Eudocia, which is listed as a fairly scarce coin.

echizento- I am 99% positive that it is her. I'll scan it again now that it is cleaned so that you can see.

OK, here are the pics. Notice the legend "?EUDO X". The O and X are separated by the fact that there is no lettering directly over her head.

It sure does look like it is her. That is an excellent find especially in an uncleaned lot. Her coins are scarce. This one looks like it might be Tantalus 7929.

jwharper & echizento- Thanks! Honestly, I got this in the same lot as my Hannibalianus. So any idea as to the scarcity or value of this coin? I know that she is not in the best of shape (and I admit that I had to do a lot of scraping with toothpicks in order to get of a heck of a lot of built-up deposits), but she seems nicer in hand (especially the detail in her head).

You quote EUDOX but changed to Eudocia. Eudoxia is a different person, wife of Arcadius and not as rare. I believe the reverse shows victory seated inscribing a shield held to the right side. You can also make out the wreath in hand of God above her head. Hairstyle vary by mint. I think yours is Constantinople which explains the N in exergue. Mine is Antioch.

dougsmit- ohhhh, now I see. You are totally right! Thanks for clearing this up and for IDing the mint for me. Might you have any idea when my coin was minted and the relative value given the condition?

Mine was $28 in 1998 and I have no idea how much to add for time or subtract for condition. Considering the difficulty of the ID, I'd guess $5-10 but I am a famous cheapskate and would not buy it for that.
Seriously folks, while it is fun to identify ghosts of former coins, relatively few buyers line up to buy coins quite this far over the hill. Rarity does not add a lot to the price of a coin until you get to issues a lot more rare than this one (remember that Christian snake coin one of you found?). What you paid for when you bought this coin was the thrill of discovery. You may find a market among others on this list who like low grade coins but few dealers will buy it for their stock. Enjoy it but don't plan on sending the kids to college when you sell.

You have been finding some excellent and scarce examples, wish I knew your source. I don't have any of her coins so I can't comment to value.

dougsmit & echizento- Thanks for the input. Oh, I certainly know that this coin is not going to buy me a new car. And, in fact, I have no intention of selling. I just like to know what my coins are worth when I input it in my data base and determine the value of my collection for the purpose of insurance. I just end up asking about value a lot when it comes to ancients because there is not a single guide to go to (such as the Standard Catalogs of World Coins). And sometimes ebay is so off the wall in the prices that some coins bring. So I just like to get the benefit of the knowledgeable and realistic collectors on this forum.
